Software development is more than just writing code. It's about finding creative solutions, working closely with your team and constantly facing new challenges. In this interview, Christian Göge, Senior Software Engineer at eddyson, gives us an exciting insight into the everyday life of a developer, tells us about the work challenges that excite him the most and why working at eddyson is much more than just a job.
"My day starts with checking Teams and my emails to make sure I don't miss any updates. As a developer, my role is not just about coding. I am the technical lead for our self-service portal, which means I work closely with the product owner to evaluate and plan new requirements, provide internal support, and ultimately turn those requirements into code.
Coding is a creative, hands-on process: I grab my toolkit and start coding. Depending on the complexity, it can take anywhere from a few hours to several days. Once the code is written, it is thoroughly tested. I often follow the principle of test-driven development, where I first write a test that fails because the feature doesn't exist yet, then implement the solution and test it until it passes.
Additionally, I have a daily meeting with the entire development team where we discuss our current tasks, challenges, and potential solutions."
"Communication is a key skill that is often underestimated. In software development, it is important to work not only within your own team, but also with other departments to better understand requirements and implement them efficiently.
Curiosity and problem-solving skills are also essential. You must enjoy learning new technologies and concepts and finding creative solutions to technical challenges. A quick grasp of technical relationships is also helpful, as development processes have many facets - from requirements analysis to final implementation.
Another important skill is a professional approach to feedback. Code reviews are a constant in development, and suggestions for improvement or criticism may arise. It is important not to take this personally, but to see it as an opportunity for growth."
"In cross-departmental teams working with different technologies and interfaces, there are many roles to choose from. You can specialize in front-end, back-end, or full-stack development, or even dive into DevOps, cloud computing, or databases.
One piece of advice that helped me: Learn by doing. Sure, you can read lots of books or take online courses but in the end, you learn the most by doing. Don't be afraid to try new things or take on challenges, even if you fail at first. Stay curious and keep learning to be successful in the long run."
"I enjoy the variety and the room for innovation. Even after several years there are always new challenges and technologies to explore. At the same time, I have the freedom to bring in my own ideas and try out innovative solutions.
I also appreciate the collegial atmosphere and close collaboration, both within the development department and with other teams. It is not about working alone but finding solutions together. eddyson is growing steadily, but the flat hierarchies ensure that we remain flexible and can react quickly to changes.
Another important aspect is the family friendliness. I have personally experienced how eddyson supported me during my parental leave. The possibility to work flexibly from home also helps me to balance work and family in the long run."
"I enjoy supporting my colleagues - whether it's handling support requests for our self-service portal or dealing with implementation issues. I love sharing knowledge and solving technical challenges together.
Programming itself fascinates me. It's a creative process where I can use code to create something of real value. Especially with complex tasks, I enjoy exploring different solutions and finding the best implementation."
"I would like to take on the role of an EDI Project Manager in our implementation team. I am particularly interested in the challenges of implementing business processes and the tools used in the process. I would love to see how these processes are developed in the field and the obstacles that arise. With this knowledge, as a developer, I could create solutions that would make the day-to-day work of implementation smoother."
"In my free time you can find me either on the badminton court or singing in the choir. Right now my main focus is my family. Most evenings I am cuddling on the couch with my newborn. If there is any time left over, I like to play games on my computer."
